Artist's Comments

Hi all, not only is this my first deviation; this is actually my first foray into digital illustration. The piece came about just through an interest in mythological / occult imagery and while this image is laden with cliches it was a simple enough concept to experiment various techniques with.

Any advise / critisism / questions would be awesome!

Especially for a first attempt at digital art, I'd say Invocation by ~SilverGinja is pretty darn good. Don't forget to fullview! (Suggested by =Nikki0417 and Featured by `silentkitty)

did you do all that from the begining?

Yes, most of it is drawn from scratch except for the base texture on the pillar which is from a photo of some sandstone and the wrinkles on his skin is taken from a close up photo of an elephant!
:iconkorubin:
the texture on the skin is great. adds a lot of detail right from the start. the composition works well, although we sort of lose the invoking circle at the bottom of the page. but it's not what's important. it's that badass demon that's important. everything about the whole pic is truly amazing. my only crit is that you should reduce the size of the full-view image so that it's easier to see.

Woops, didn't realise it was that high a res, fanx man.

first try at it??!! Well please continue, this is really beautiful. :D :+fav:

I really like how the background came out- did you airbrush that from scratch? Those columns are fantastic. The subject itself was well done- the texture and lighting was effective. The outline for something so scaley is a little bit smooth- after you finish locking the transparency to keep the paint in, you might want to unlock it, and blur the outline a little as well as add some dark shapes to reminisce scales (if that was your intent for skin texture). The lower half is beautifully done- I love how the claws turned out. The pentagram looks pretty bright- maybe some of that light would reflect a little more on his claws? =)

Thanks much for the advice Starlit, i really appreciate you taking the time to look at my work in that much detail! Im currently working on a new piece and im sure this will come in handy.... As for the skin texture I was going for tough and leathery rather than scaly, though in hindsight the outline is still too smooth for the depth of these wrinkles!

Amazingly well done, Everything i could say about has already been said unfortunately lol. So i'm left with just saying Great Job :), I especially love the details of coloring put int the subject...just beautiful.
